Sandal Gulab Oud begins with the unmistakable smell of natural rose lush, deep and alive. Not the sweet, polished rose of modern perfumery, but something closer to holding freshly gathered rose petals in your hands: dewy at first, gently spicy, slightly honeyed and with that beautiful green darkness found in real rose.
Very quickly, sandalwood begins to wrap around the rose. It brings a creamy, buttery softness that takes away any sharpness without making the composition overly sweet. The effect is almost tactile red rose petals crushed into warm, creamy sandalwood.
Then comes the oud.
It doesn’t immediately dominate. It rises slowly from beneath the sandalwood with old wood, damp earth, soft leather and a distinctly barny Hindi character. That little animalic roughness is important it prevents the rose and sandalwood from becoming too pretty or too smooth. There is something ancient and slightly untamed underneath all that beauty.
As it develops on warm skin, the three materials begin to merge. The rose becomes darker and more velvety, the sandalwood warmer and almost milky, while the oud loses some of its initial barniness and turns deep, woody, resinous and quietly smoky.
The drydown is perhaps the most beautiful part: creamy sandalwood stained with rose, resting over the lingering warmth of aged oud. Occasionally the rose resurfaces; then you catch sandalwood then a little earthy oud. It keeps moving rather than smelling linear.
Sandal Gulab Oud is not simply rose with oud. It smells like an old Indian attar tradition rose, sandalwood and aged oud slowly melting into one another on skin. Rich, intimate, slightly animalic and deeply comforting.
