The challenge with materials such as civet and ambergris is not merely to showcase their raw power, but to reveal their beauty. Simply smelling animalic, harsh or unapologetically primal does not, in my experience represent the highest form of perfumery.
The true art lies in uncovering the magnetic qualities hidden beneath their rugged exterior and presenting them in a way that is both captivating and socially wearable.
Ambre Civet is built upon that very idea.
Rather than waiting patiently for the musky facets to emerge hours later in the dry down they announce themselves almost immediately. From the very first spray, the air is filled with an alluring muskiness that feels luminous, mineralic, oceanic and softly powdery. It is a fragrance that creates aura; it quietly draws people closer.
What makes the composition particularly intriguing is the interplay between opposite worlds. A bouquet of florals with tuberose at its heart lends an enigmatic elegance to the composition. Its creamy, narcotic beauty softens and elevates the carnal undertones of fine leather that naturally arise from the maceration of 1990s civet. Alongside it, the salty, mineral nuances of aged grey ambergris intertwine seamlessly with the musk tones, creating a harmony that feels both sensual and refined.
To work with such materials today is increasingly uncommon. To place them at the very center of a composition is rarer still. The idea itself is daring not only creatively but financially as these materials are becoming ever more scarce and precious by the gram. Yet it is precisely this challenge that inspires me.
Every ingredient within Ambre Civet has been carefully orchestrated to support the experience of a “surf and turf” concept in a bottle where oceanic ambergris meets animalic civet, where mineral freshness meets warm sensuality and where refinement meets instinct. The goal is not contrast for its own sake but harmony between seemingly opposing forces.
As mentioned before only eighteen bottles have been produced. Future new releases may be even smaller, or occasionally slightly larger depending on the nature of the materials available. Limiting production allows me to work without commercial boundaries giving complete freedom to showcase obscure, rare, and often forgotten ingredients. It is within these small batches that some of the most magical combinations become possible.
I have often been asked about samples. While I understand their practicality, I personally feel that a 2ml sample rarely does justice to artisan work of this nature. Also, these are very small batches. Fragrance is not merely experienced in a single wearing. It unfolds through different seasons, environments, moods and moments of life.
For this reason, I believe the 15ml format offers a far more meaningful experience. It allows the wearer to live with the fragrance, revisit it, and discover new facets over time. Much like a fine wine it continues to mature in the bottle, revealing greater depth and character with age. It also enables collectors to preserve and archive a work in its entirety rather than reducing it to a fleeting impression on a sample card.
This philosophy is important not only from an artistic perspective but also for the sustainability of my work. It allows me to continue searching for rare materials, experimenting with unusual ideas and pursuing exclusive projects that would otherwise be impossible.
